West Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra is the new chairman of empowered committee of state finance ministers on GST. Mitra will succeed kerala finance minister K M Mani, who had to resign in November due to corruption charges.
Mitra, an economist who for long was the secretary-general of premiere industry body Ficci before joining politics in 2011.He has been instrumental in including some important changes in the GST in last year.
Mitra feels that in-principle support is emanating from the fact that tiny, micro, small and medium enterprises, which employ over 90% of the working people of this country, will be benefited from a single tax rather than having to deal with dozens of taxes.
